What is a disability?
The Social Security Administration defines disability as "a
physical or mental impairment that is expected to keep you
from doing any substantial work for at least a year, or have a
condition that is expected to result in your death."
Who are the disabled?
- People with work related injuries, or injuries resulting from
sports, falls or accidents
- People who have had a stroke or suffer from heart disease
- People with CFS, chronic joint pain or fibromyalgia
- People with mental health issues
- People with eating disorders, digestive disorders, obesity or
diabetes
- People with spinal cord injuries, amputations, post-polio
syndrome or motor dysfunction
- People with significant loss of hearing, sight or speech
- People with malignant or terminal diseases, i.e., cancer,
Huntington's chorea, cirrhosis, leukemia or chronic anemias
- People with neurological impairments, i.e. Tourette
Syndrome, Parkinson's Disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral
palsy, epilepsy or muscular dystrophy
- People with respiratory diseases, i.e. chronic asthma,
frequent episodes of pneumonia, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis,
or emphysema
- People with diseases of the immune system, i.e. AIDS,
hepatitis or lupus
- Children with birth defects, mental disorders or autism

Who is eligible for benefits?
- Anyone who has worked 5 out of the last 10 years and paid
into Social Security and becomes disabled
- Anyone (under 65) who has never worked, is disabled, and
qualifies within low income and limited assets guidelines
- Widows and widowers (50 years or older) with disabilities,
eligible on the record of a spouse
- Young adults with a limited work history who become disabled
- Children with disabilities whose parents qualify within low
income and limited assets guidelines or whose parents qualify
under Social Security Disability
